The Ontario Community Transportation Network (OCTN)

The Rural Ontario Institute (ROI) and the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition (OHCC) with funding support from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) have collaborated to develop the Ontario Community Transportation Network (OCTN). The OCTN connects individuals, organizations, and transportation providers interested in exchanging information, experiences and best practices about community transportation services in Ontario. Through this Network, you will be able to connect with other communities who have implemented or are in the process of developing community transportation services.

The Ontario Community Transportation Network welcomes the participation of all community transportation stakeholders. This includes municipalities, public transit providers, private sector transportation operators, health and social agencies, community organizations, ride-sharing groups, transportation technology companies, and others who want to further mobility solutions in their communities. Given that a key goal of the OCTN is to promote and facilitate the sharing and exchange of experiences, ideas and information, plans for the Network include this website, a newsletter, a directory, a discussion forum, webinars, events, and other online and in-person networking activities.

What is Community Transportation (CT) and why is it important?

Community Transportation (CT) refers to all of the transportation services and resources that exist within a community which are available to help meet community transportation needs. These can include: municipally-funded transportation, privately owned transportation services, volunteer driver programs, vans that not-for-profit organizations own and operate for seniors or people with disabilities, shuttle buses for commuting students and workers, and other programs. Community Transportation initiatives are designed specifically for the communities they serve, and in direct response to the needs identified by those communities.

Community Transportation services enable people to access education, training, employment, goods (such as food and clothing), health services, social programs, entertainment, and other resources and activities that they might not otherwise be able to. CT is not only about meeting the mobility or transportation needs of the passenger, but also about meeting broader community needs as well. CT focuses on devising and delivering practical and innovative solutions to addressing community needs, while at the same time helping to combat social exclusion and improving health status, enhancing civic engagement, promoting economic generation, and achieving environmental sustainability. This is accomplished through the provision of safe, accessible, and affordable transportation solutions for community members.
